West Virginia

West Virginia is a state in the Appalachian mountains. West Virginia broke away from the Commonwealth of Virginia during the American Civil War (1861 to 1865), and was admitted to the Union as the 35th state on June 20th 1865.

Because of the state's mountaineous terrain, only a limited amount of farming is done in the state. West Virginia's most important industry is coal mining. Some oil and gas extraction is also performed in the state, however only small to medium size fields have been found so far. In general, West Virginia has struggled economically, and has one of the lowest per capita incomes, and the lowest household income, of any state in the Union.

The capital and largest city of West Virginia is Charleston with a population of over 50,000. In second place, and close behind is Huntington. Additionally, there are about a dozen other cities in West Virginia with populations over 10,000.

There are not a huge number of tourist attractions in West Virginia, however there are some places that you may wish to visit. These include the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine in Beckley, the Grave Creek Mound Archaeology Complex in Moundsville, West Virginia Penitentiary also in Moundsville and the Oglebay Resort and Conference Center in Wheeling, which includes a zoo and planetarium.

Perhaps the best-known professional sports franchise in West Virginia is West Virginia Power (South Atlantic League baseball) who are based in Charleston.

Probably the most famous educational institution in West Virginia is the University of West Virginia which is in Morgantown
