Miami is a city in southeastern
Florida.
As of the 2000 census, the city's population was 362,470,
but the metropolitan areas's population was 5.4 million.
Miami has many links to Central America, Latin America, and
the Caribbean, as well as being home to a large
Spanish-speaking
population, in particular a large Cuban community which makes up over a third of
Miami's population. Because of these links with other parts of the western
hemisphere, the city is sometimes known as the
"Gateway to the Americas".
Miami is also the site of one of the largest and most important sea ports in
the United States. The Port of Miami is used both
for cargo, and passenger traffic, and is in fact the busiest passenger port
in the country, and has been for over a decade. It is from the sea port that
Miami gets two of its other nicknames:
"Cargo Gateway of the Americas", and
"Cruise Capital of the World" - the latter in
recognition of the many cruise ships which sail from the port.
Some of the major companies with their headquarters in Miami include Burger King and Lennar.
The principal airport serving Miami is Miami International Airport.
Sports teams in Miami include the Major League Baseball team, the Florida Marlins, the NBA basketball team, the Miami Heat, the NFL American football team, the Miami Dolphins, and the USL-1 soccer team, Miami FC.
