ColoradoColorado is a state in the western part of United States, that encompasses parts of the Rocky Mountains regions, central and southwestern parts of the country. Colorado is particularly known for its mountainous terrain. Within the state are a number of well-known ski resorts such as Aspen, Vail, Crested Butte and Steamboat Springs, as well as 54 peaks which are over 14,000 feet (4,270 meters), known as the "fourteeners". ![]() Despite stereotypes, Colorado also contains a considerable proportion of flat land in the East of the state. This part of the state is relatively sparsely populated, and much of the land is used either for dryland farming, or for ranching. The largest city, and capital of Colorado is Denver. Other cities in Colorado include Arvada, Aurora, Boulder, Broomfield, Castle Rock, Centennial, Colorado Springs, Commerce City, Denver, Fort Collins, Grand Junction, Greeley, Lakewood, Littleton, Longmont, Loveland, Parker, Pueblo, Thornton and Westminster. As already mentioned, Colorado is nationally known as a center of Winter sports, especially skiing, and is home to resorts such as Steamboat Ski Resort in Steamboat Springs, and Winter Park Resort in Winter Park. However, Colorado is not just about skiing! There are also a number of other tourist attractions in Colorado, for example in Denver, there is Denver Art Museum, Six Flags Elitch Gardens and Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum, in Golden, there is the Buffalo Bill Museum & Grave and the Colorado Railroad Museum, and in Colorado Springs, there is the Garden of the Gods and the Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun. Additionally, THE INTERNATIONAL, a golf tournament which is part of the PGA Tour is held at Castle Pines Golf Club in Castle Rock. Some of the leading companies headquartered in Colorado are Boston Market (in Golden), EchoStar Communications Corporation (in Englewood), First Data Corporation (in Greenwood Village) and Qwest (in Denver). Sports teams in Colorado include the Colorado Avalanche (ice hockey in the NHL) in Denver, the Colorado Rapids (Major League Soccer) in Commerce City, the Colorado Rockies (Major League Baseball) in Denver, the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (Pacific Coast League baseball) in Colorado Springs, the Denver Broncos (American football in the NFL) in Denver, and the Denver Nuggets (National Basketball Association) in Denver. Important education institutions in Colorado include Auraria Campus, Regis University and University of Denver, all of which are in Denver.
