Michigan is a Midwestern state of the contiguous United States. It is named after Lake Michigan, which it has a shoreline on, but it also has shorelines on three of the other five Great Lakes, as well as on Lake Saint Clair.

The state consists of two peninsulas, the Upper Peninsula (U.P.) being separated from the Lower Peninsula by the Straits of Mackinac, the channel which connects Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.

Leading education institutions in Michigan include Michigan State University (in East Lansing), University of Detroit Mercy (in Detroit), the University of Michigan (in Ann Arbor) and Wayne State University (in Detroit).

Some of the major companies headquartered in Michigan include Compuware (in Detroit), DaimlerChrysler (in Auburn Hills), Delphi (in Troy), Domino's Pizza (in Ann Arbor), Ford Motor Company (in Dearborn), General Motors (in Detroit), Lear (in Southfield), Pulte Homes (in Bloomfield Hills), The Dow Chemical Company (in Midland), Visteon (in Van Buren Township) and Whirlpool (in Benton Harbor).

The main airport serving Michigan is Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport which is in Detroit.
