Jefferson National Expansion Memorial


Gateway Arch seen behind the Old Courthouse, in St. Louis, Missouri Jefferson National Expansion Memorial is a 91-acre (0.36 km2) park along the Mississippi River in in St. Louis, Missouri. The park commemorates the Louisiana Purchase, the establishment of the first cathedral and first civil government West of the Mississippi River, and the debate over slavery that was raised by the Dred Scott case (which was referred to the Supreme Court from the Old Courthouse in St. Louis).

The centerpiece of the park is the Gateway Arch which stands 630 feet (192 meters) tall, and 630 feet (192 meters) wide at its widest point. The arch is hollow and contains an observation deck at the top. Beneath the arch is a visitor center which is operated by the National Park Service.
