Began as a collective effort by members of the West Virginia Wildwater Association in 1965, Wildwater West Virginia emerged as the preeminent guide to whitewater in West Virginia. Now part of a new series and a new name to boot, A Canoeing Guide to West Virginia continues this legacy, guiding boaters of all abilities to over 120 of West Virginia’s rivers, creeks and streams. The result of combined knowledge of hundreds of paddlers, this book gives paddlers all the information they need to paddle rivers safely and confidently: At a glance information helps boaters pick rivers to match their ability and current weather conditions, while river descriptions, gauge and shuttle route information provide additional critical information. More than an encyclopedia of mountain rivers and hydrologic data, Whitewater West Virginia is also a collection of experiences and an introduction to some of the most amazing geography in the east. Destined to ride in the dry bags and glove compartments of paddlers nationwide, this book continues to set the standard for all paddling guidebooks. Some of the rivers profiled include: Gauley River, North Branch of the Potomac, New River, Cheat River, Tygart River, Waites Run, Red Run, Roaring Creek, and Keeney Creek. |

The definitive guide to backpacking and hiking in this highly rural and still-unspoiled state. West Virginia native and long-distance hiker and author Leonard M. Adkins has walked more than 400 miles to uncover 50 hikes available to outdoor travelers of all ages and abilities. One hike passes by a listing wooden shelter once used by President Lyndon B. Johnson; another goes into a series of tunnels cut through the mountains. The shortest hike is 0.5 mile, the longest is a challenging multiday backpacking trek on the state's premier long-distance route, the Allegheny Trail. An overview chart provides information on the 50 hikes at a glance, making it easy to choose the hike that's right for you.

Click Here | Product Description: The only state born as a result of the Civil War, West Virginia was the most divided state in the nation. About forty thousand of its residents served in the combatant forces--about twenty thousand on each side. The Mountain State also saw its fair share of battles, skirmishes, raids and guerrilla warfare, with places like Harpers Ferry, Philippi and Rich Mountain becoming household names in 1861. When the Commonwealth of Virginia seceded from the Union on April 17, 1861, leaders primarily from the northwestern region of the state began the political process that eventually led to the creation of West Virginia on June 20, 1863. Renowned Civil War historian Mark A. Snell has written the first thorough history of these West Virginians and their civil war in more than fifty years.Other books in the Civil War Sesquicentennial Series include:The Battle of Antietam ♦ The Battle of Franklin ♦ The Chancellorsville Campaign ♦ The Battle of South Mountain ♦ Stonewall Jackson's 1862 Valley Campaign ♦ Charleston Under Siege ♦ Andersonville Civil War Prison ♦ The Civil War at Perryville ♦ The Battle of Okolona ♦ Fort Davidson and the Battle of Pilot Knobb ♦ The Two Civil War Battles of Newtonia ♦ The Battle of Port Royal ♦ The Confederacy's Secret Weapon ♦ Lee in the Lowcountry ♦ Defending South Carolina's Coast ♦ Facing Sherman in South Carolina ♦ The Battle of Brandy Station ♦ The Battle of Cedar Creek ♦ The Battle of Fredericksburg ♦ The Battle of Piedmont ♦ The Battle of New Market Heights ♦ Big Bethel ♦ The Battle of Mine Creek ♦ Civil War Atlanta ♦ The Battle of Westport ♦ The Union is Dissolved ♦ The Battle of Fort Donelson |

Beginning as a narrow gauge line in 1880, its name and gauge changed in 1881 and in the ensuing years it opened a huge swathe of timber and coal territory in northern West Virginia to use, creating such towns as Elkins, Davis, and Thomas. A major connection was made with the C&O's Greenbrier Branch at Durbin, W. Va. in 1900. Sold to the Gould interests in 1902 it became an important part of the Western Maryland Railway in 1905 and contributed heavily to that road's prosperity in the coal and lumber trade down to modern times. This book is illustrated with superb photos, written in a cogent and informative style based on outstanding scholarly research in basic documents. The story is carried down through the WM and Chessie System eras to today's CSX operations on the remaining lines. A must for those interested in West Virginia, mountain railroading, and coal and lumber development. This is the second volume by this author. His West Virginia's Coal & Coke Railway - A B&O Predecessor, published by TLC last year, has been a best seller and has gathered great reviews for its completeness, accuracy, insight, and appearance. This new work is comparable! |
