Soaring With the Eagles: The Copper Peak Story

By Charles Supercynski

Superior Peak Publishing
Released: 2012-12-03
Kindle Edition (634 pages)

Soaring With the Eagles: The Copper Peak Story

Product Description:
SOARING WITH THE EAGLES: THE COPPER PEAK STORY is the story of ski jumping in the Midwest and particularly in the Western Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and how a band of impoverished but determined group of ski jumping enthusiasts were able to build the largest ski jumping facility in the world at Copper Peak. The story chronicles the origins of the sport in the Midwest in the early 1900's and how Ironwood would come to claim the world's distance in 1913. The growth of ski jumping in the Midwest in the first half of the 20th century was phenominal as the sport became the first extreme winter sport. The local ski jumping community would develop into a powerhouse of ski jumping in the 1920's and again in the 1930's. As national and world records were regularly being broken, the desire to jump further on a pair of skis led to the Ironwood skiers "dream" of building a ski jumping facility larger than any other facility in the world. It would take this band of dedicated and committed skiers nearly 35 years to bring their dream to fruition. This is their story! The hardships, challenges and setback they endured in an economy---deep iron ore mining---which was collapsing and how they overcame these obstacles, is truly inspirational. The book is a testimonial to the human spirit that great things can happen if the will and determination to succeed are present. Operating the Copper Peak facility would prove as daunting as building the facility filled with its own challenges and opportunities.
The book is also about the growth of the sport in the Midwest and recognizes many of the talented ski jumpers from throughout the country who challenged the ski jumps at Curry and Wolverine hills in Ironwood and the Copper Peak Ski Flying hill. The stories of some of the ski jumping aerialists are also told and anumber of unique exhibitions are described. Some additional winter sports and activities unique to the Gogebic Range are also highlighted.
While the thrust of the book is about the history of ski jumping in the Midwest, the primary focus is how a small, rural community of 5,300 residents---Ironwood, Mich.---could rise to the top of the ski jumping world. It is an awe-inspiring story.

Product Description:
The history of skiing in the Midwest closely parallels the history of the settling of the region. The Norwegians, Finns, and Swedes who emigrated to the Midwest brought with them this sport, one that began as necessary means of transportation in their native Scandinavian homelands. Whether it be the excitement of the cross country race, or the daring young men and women risking life and limb jumping the hills, skiing captured the imagination of the immigrants and locals alike. Together they formed local ski clubs and participated in competitions across the region throughout the long winter months, and many of these same daredevils showcased their talents to the world as members of US Olympic teams. Midwest Skiing: A Glance Back is a stunning visual history that allows us to look back not only on the early times and places, but the people who made this pastime into one of the most popular recreational and competitive sports.
