Tomb of the Unknowns
The Tomb of the Unknowns is a monument to American soldiers who
have died without their remains being identified. It is located
in Arlington,
Virginia within the
Arlington National Cemetery.
The tomb is in the form of a white marble sarcophagus with columns set
into the surface. The North and South panels bear six wreaths representing
the six major battles of World War I.
Sculpted into the East panel, are three Greek figures
representing Peace, Victory and Valor. The West panel bears the following
inscription:
HERE RESTS IN
HONORED GLORY
AN AMERICAN

KNOWN BUT TO GOD
