Adopted in 1897, the flag of Rhode Island is white field with a gold anchor in the center (symbolizing hope) surrounded by thirteen stars (signifying the original thirteen states and Rhode Island being the thirteenth state to ratify the US Constitution). Beneath the anchor is a banner bearing the state's motto, "Hope".
