Mayagüez
Mayagüez is a city in
Puerto Rico.
As of 2005, the city has an estimated population of 98,434.
Mayagüez was originally founded by Spanish settlers in 1760. Its name means "Land of Clear Waters", and is derived from the original indigenous inhabitants' (the Taino) word, "Maygüex" which means "clear water". The name refers to the Yagüez River River, which at the outlet of which, the city was founded. Mayagüez is known for its contributions to Puerto Rican food industry. There is a very large concentration of mango trees in the area, and there are quite a number of enterprises based around the production of food. Until quite recently, Mayagüez was a major tuna canning and processing center, with around around 80% of the tuna products consumed in the United States packaged in the Mayagüez area, and the largest employeer, StarKist, employing 11,000 workers.
