MansfieldMansfield is a city in Richland County in central Ohio. As of the 2000 census, the population was 50,615. European settlement in the area dates back to 1808, with the city being named after Jared Mansfield, the U.S. surveyor-general who directed its planning. Mansfield was incorporated as a village in 1828, and became a city in 1857. The name "Richland" is descriptive of the very fertile soil in the area. The soil has in fact proven particularly suitable for growing apple orchards. Apples were introduced to the area by the John Chapman, who is of course widely known as "Johnny Appleseed".
