AkronAkron is a city in Summit County in Northeastern Ohio. As of the 2000 census, its population was 217,074. The city was founded in 1825, near the Ohio & Erie Canal, and soon became an important center for the manufacture of staircase locks (used in canals for raising or lowering boats between stretches of water at different elevations). This history left its mark in both in the name "Summit" in Summit County, and in the name "Akron" itself, which means summit. In the late 19th and early 20th century, Akron became an important center of rubber and tire manufacturing. Both Goodyear, and its arch-rival, Firestone, were founded in the city (although Firestone has subsequently moved its headquarters - but not its technical center - to Nashville, Tennesse).
