RaleighLocated in Wake County, Raleigh is the capital and 2nd most populous of North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, its population was 276,093. Raleigh is a purpose built state capital, the site having been chosen for this purpose in 1788, with the city being officially established in 1792. The location was chosen because it was close to Isaac Hunter's Tavern which was already popular with state legislators.
