Taos

Taos is a city in Taos County, New Mexico. As of the 2000 census, its population was 4,700.

The city takes its name from a Native American (Tiwa) word, meaning "red willow", and traces its roots back to the Spanish conquest of Pueblo villages in the area.

Attractions in the area include: Here is some other information about Taos:
  • Taos Plaza is one of the few places where it is traditional to fly the US flag during both day and night. The tradition dates back to 1861 at the start of the American Civil War, when Southern sympathizers tried to tear down the flag, but Captain Smith Simpson and others nailed the flag to a cottonwood pole (making lowering the flag at dark impossible) and guarded it around the clock, threatening to shoot anybody who tried to remove it. When the US Congress subsequently heard of the story, they passed a resolution granting permission to fly the flag around the clock in Taos Plaza.

  • Some residents of Taos report hearing a low pitched humming sound. Although various explanations ranging from military equipment in the area to UFOs to tinnitus have been proposed, the source of the sound has never been definitively traced, and the "Taos Hum" remains a mystery to this day.
