Cedar Falls


Cedar Falls is a city in Black Hawk County in Iowa. As of the 2000 census, its population was 36,145.

The city was originally founded in 1845 by William Sturgis and his brother-in-law, Erasmus D. Adams, as "Sturgis Falls". The Sturgis family however moved out of the area in the Fall of 1847, and the settlement's name was changed to Cedar Falls. And while the original founders may be gone, they are certainly not forgotten: they are remember each year in annual community event know as the "Sturgis Falls Celebration".

  • Perhaps the most famous educational institution in Cedar Falls is the University of North Iowa, which is a public university with a student enrollment of over 12,000, including more than 10,000 undergraduates.
