Illinois Flag

The flag of Illinois shows the Great Seal of Illinois on a white field. In the eagle's beak is the state's motto "State Sovereignty, National Union". Beneath the seal is the word "Illinois".

The flag is based on a 1912 design by Lucy Derwent, who created it for a contest held by the Daughters of the American Revolution. The flag became the official state flag on July 6th 1915. The word "Illinois" was added on September 17th 1969, after Bruce McDaniel petitioned to have it added because he had noted that many people with whom he had served in Vietnam did not recognize the flag.
