San Jose

San Jose is the 3rd largest city in California, and 10th largest in the United States. As of 2006, the city's population was estimated at 929,936, with 1,810,560 living in the San Jose metropolitan area.

San Jose was the first city to be incorporated in the state of California, this having been done in 1850, just after the area had been annexed from Mexico (in 1846). San Jose then went on to become California's first state capital, as well hosting the first two sessions (1850 to 1851) of the California Legislature.

One interesting issue is whether the name should be spelled with or without the diacritical mark, that is to say, as "San Jose" or "San José". The City Charter, defines the official name as "The City of San Jose" (without the diacritical mark), and this is probably the most common way that the city's name is spelled. On the other hand, on April 3rd 1979, the City Council adopted "San José" (with the diacritical mark), as the official spelling, and this spelling is used on the city seal, official stationery, office titles and department names.

No needless fluff, no boring anthropological lessons! Just everything we love!

We don`t stuff our travel content with working hours, credit-cards accepted, nearby transportation and user-reviews as it tends to bulk up the writing and are subject to change since the time of publishing. Once you decide the places you want to visit, these infos can easily be found at your hotel concierge, on-line or on Google Maps.

No user-review based content!

Similarly, our philosophy has been that user-reviewed travel sites are subjective, as they tend to top-rank places that manage their reputation on those sites. So little corner bakeries, unique shops by local artisans, secluded beaches and hidden bars don't show up in those sites as visibly as places that have an on-line marketer or social media specialist. Similarly, we believe the opinion of one well-informed local expert should outweigh the opinion of hundreds of first-time visitors to San Jose. First-time visitors tend to flock to famous tourist attractions, creating a vicious circle, accentuating just the popular places. Our local experts know the entire city, and know what deserves a visit, whether a famous attraction or a quaint corner.

'San Jose Top 103 Spots' is the first travel guide to San Jose you ought to read.

It quickly helps you define your short-list of places you want to visit, so you don`t have to spend hours reading hundreds of pages of dense writing. All for less than the price of a sandwich.

Product Description:
San Jose is the "Capital of the Silicon Valley," the high-rise, economic engine of advanced technology. Yet it was once a verdant valley, inhabited by wildlife, waterfowl, and the native Ohlone people. The Spanish who founded California's first civilian settlement here in 1777 named it for Saint Joseph, the patron saint of the Spanish Expedition. Their farms fed the soldiers at the Monterey and San Francisco presidios, beginning an agricultural industry that thrived for nearly 200 years. Although serving briefly as California's first state capital, for many decades downtown was the somewhat sleepy commercial center of the Santa Clara Valley. A housing and population expansion that began in the 1950s exploded with San Jose's rebirth as a technological mecca.

Product Description:
Since the founding of California's El Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe in 1777, people of Mexican ancestry have contributed to make San José a rich cultural, political, and economic epicenter. Mexican miners who worked in the local mines helped San José become one of the top mercury producers in the world. In the 20th century, Mexicans labored in the "Valley of Heart's Delight," as the Santa Clara Valley region was called, picking, canning, drying, and packaging fruits and vegetables for America's dinner table. They paid homage to their cultural heritage as they formed ballet folklórico groups, established mariachi bands, painted murals, and wrote literature. Through grassroots organizing and collective action, countless heroines and heroes, such as labor leader Cesar Chavez, dedicated their lives to improving conditions in their neighborhoods and communities. In 1999, the City of San José acknowledged the contributions of Mexicans with the grand opening of the Mexican Heritage Plaza, a cultural center for the performing arts.
