Pioneer ParkOriginally known as "Alaskaland", Pioneer Park is a 44-acre city park in Fairbanks, Alaska. The park commemorates Alaskan history, and highlights include "Gold Rush Town" (35 restored buildings from early Fairbanks, most of which now contain gift shops and other stores), the SS Nenana (a paddle steamer), a replica Alaskan native village, the Pioneer Air Museum (containing 14 aircraft), the Tanana Valley Railroad Museum (which contains an 1899 steam locomotive - the oldest working steam locomotive in Alaska), and mini-golf. A narrow-gauge railroad, called "Crooked Creek and Whiskey Island Railroad" encircles the path. The park was first opened in 1967, a year chosen to commemorate 100 years since the Alaska Purchase, by which the United States acquired Alaska. Related Links: |
