Colonel Benjamin O. Davis, Jr., commander of the 332nd Fighter Group Tuskegee is a city in Macon County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, its population was 11,846.

Tuskegee is famous as a important center for African-American achievement, and has been for over 100 years. The city is known by the nickname "The Pride of the Swift Growing South".

Here are some other facts about Tuskegee:
  • Perhaps the most famous educational institution in Tuskegee is Tuskegee University, which was originally founded by Booker T. Washington in 1881 as the Tuskegee Normal School for Colored Teachers. One of the most famous teachers in Tuskegee was George Washington Carver.

  • Tuskegee was the birthplace of Rosa Parks ("Mother of the Modern-Day Civil Rights Movement") in 1913.

  • The 332nd Fighter Group of the US Army Air Corps (popularly known as the "Tuskegee Airmen"), a group of African-American pilots who served with distinction in World War II, was founded at Tuskegee University (then known as the Tuskegee Institute).
