Space Needle
The Space Needle is probably the best-known landmark of
Seattle, Washington. It was originally
built for the 1962
World's Fair.
The Space Needle is 605 feet (184 meters) high, and 138 feet (42 meters) wide at its widest point.
The observation deck is 520 feet (158 meters) above the ground ground,
and the SkyCity restaurant is 152 meters (500 feet).
In many photographs of Seattle, the Space Needle appears to rise above
the rest of city's skyscrapers, however this is caused by a trick of
perspective. This is because the Space Needle is 0.8 miles (1.3 kilometers)
to the Northwest of the skyscrapers, and most common camera angle places
the Space Needle in the foreground.

Click Here | Product Description: The Space Needle is a towering 605-foot structure that seems to float above the Seattle landscape. At the time it was built, for the 1962 Seattle World's Fair, it was a design and construction triumph and the tallest structure west of the Mississippi River. Today, it remains one of the most enduring symbols of Washington and of the Northwest. Our nation's unique identity has been formed, in large part, by the monuments and landmarks we have erected. Structures such as the famous Gateway Arch in St. Louis and the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C., stand today as permanent reminders of the people and events that have built a strong America. Many of these structures made history even as they were created; most integrated the latest in design and technology and required the skills of thousands of workers. For the first time, the Building America series chronicles the massive undertakings that mark some of the greatest triumphs of human engineering. The fact that these projects were even attempted, and then completed successfully, is a testament to the boldness of human ingenuity and a tribute to the brave spirit of the American people. It is that special spirit that is now captured in the pages of the Building America series. Grades 3-7; 7 1/2 x 9; 48 pages; 40-45 photos; Chronology; Glossary; Further Reading; Source; Notes; Index |

Product Description: This richly illustrated and well-researched volume is the official 50th Anniversary commemorative history of the Century 21 Exposition/1962 Seattle World's Fair.Space Needle, science, skyrides, showgirls. Many nations, monorail stations, Elvis gyrations. The 1962 Seattle World's Fair -- Century 21 Exposition -- had it all, optimistically looking ahead to theorize and imagine what the future might hold. Century 21 Exposition drew 10 million visitors -- remarkable for a fair staged in a lesser-known city far from the public eye -- and captured America at the peak of Cold War tensions, on the cusp of cultural revolution. Behind the glitter and diplomacy was a larger vision: Business leaders, elected officials, and residents who built the fair's success vowed that when the lights went out and the tourists went home, Seattle would be left with a much-needed civic center. In the half-century since the fair, Seattle Center has become the artistic and cultural hub of the city -- the brilliant and remarkable legacy of a fondly remembered six months in 1962. About the Author Paula Becker is a staff historian at HistoryLink.org, where her essays document the dance marathon craze of the 1920s and 1930s, war-effort knitting on the home front during World Wars I and II, and the career of The Egg And I author Betty MacDonald, among numerous other subjects. She cowrote (with Alan J. Stein) the book Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition: Washington's First World's Fair. Alan J. Stein is a HistoryLink.org staff historian and award-winning author of Safe Passage: The Birth of Washington State Ferries; Bellevue Timeline; The Olympic: The Story of Seattle's Landmark Hotel; and (with Paula Becker) Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition: Washington's First World's Fair. |

Click Here | Product Description: A classic and hugely entertaining political novel, the cat-and-mouse story of urban intrigue in Seattle both in 1962, when Seattle hosted the World's Fair, and in 2001, after its transformation in the Microsoft gold rush.
Larger than life, Roger Morgan was the mastermind behind the fair that made the city famous and is still a backstage power forty years later, when at the age of seventy he runs for mayor in hopes of restoring all of Seattle's former glory. Helen Gulanos, a reporter every bit as eager to make her mark, sees her assignment to investigate the events of 1962 become front-page news with Morgan's candidacy, and resolves to find out who he really is and where his power comes from: in 1962, a brash and excitable young promoter, greeting everyone from Elvis Presley to Lyndon Johnson, smooth-talking himself out of difficult situations, dipping in and out of secret card games; now, a beloved public figure with, it turns out, still-plentiful secrets. Wonderfully interwoven into this tale of the city of dreams are backroom deals, idealism and pragmatism, the best and worst ambitions, and all the aspirations that shape our communities and our lives. |
