RichmondRichmond is the capital of Virginia. As of 2005, its population was estimated as 193,777. During the American Civil War (1861 to 1865), Richmond was the capital of the Confederate States of America (although Montgomery, Alabama was the first capital of the Confederacy). At the end of the Civil War, about a quarter of the city was destroyed by fires set by retreating Confederate soldiers - the next day (April 3rd, 1865), Robert E.
