Product Description:
On the sun-drenched South Carolina coast, just forty-five minutes from the enchanting city of Charleston, lies one of the nation's most beloved barrier islands--a dazzling, miles-long beach; deep green foliage; massive, centuries-old hardwoods; sparkling marshland leading to the horizon; a dizzying array of birdlife amidst all manner of flora and fauna. And then there's the golf.

Kiawah first came to the public's consciousness back in 1991, when its bellwether Ocean Course served as host venue for the Ryder Cup Matches, still remembered as among the most thrilling golf competitions ever played. Now, a generation later, Kiawah and the Ocean Course return to the spotlight as the host of the 2012 PGA Championship, the first Major Championship to ever be contested in the golf-mad, golf-rich state of South Carolina.

Veteran golf and travel writer Joel Zuckerman shines the spotlight not only on the incredible Ocean Course but also on the remaining quartet of wonderful courses at the Kiawah Resort and the pair of aces at the Kiawah Island Club, among others. Beginning with the history of the island itself through the centuries, Zuckerman provides the whole story of golf on Kiawah, from the groundbreaking Ryder Cup that first raised Kiawah's profile among golf fans the world over to the 2012 PGA Championship. The history of the club and the courses is further bolstered with profiles of some of Kiawah's most significant individuals, among the most celebrated names in golf.

Kiawah Golf is a must-read for anyone who loves Kiawah or loves golf--and truly, don t the two go hand in hand?

Product Description:
The game of golf got its start in the Southeastern United States in 1892 on four holes with sand greens at Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, South Carolina. Within five years, Palmetto had expanded to eighteen holes and the first nine-hole course in neighboring Augusta, Georgia was designed at the Hotel Bon Air. For half a century, the Augusta-Aiken area flourished as the winter destination of choice for the rich, famous, and powerful in America. Presidents Taft, Harding, and Eisenhower vacationed here. Baseball great Ty Cobb bought a home in Augusta's quaint Summerville neighborhood. It was here that Bobby Jones began the improbable journey towards a Grand Slam, then built his dream golf course. By the turn of the century, winter tourism and grand resort hotels in the Augusta-Aiken area were well established. A favorable winter climate and easy rail access drew vacationers to Highland Park Hotel (1866), Willcox Hotel (1898), and Park in the Pines (1900) in Aiken; Hotel Bon Air (1890) and Partridge Inn (1913) in Augusta; and Hampton Terrace Hotel and Golf Club (1903) in North Augusta. Resorts in Florida and the growth of the air travel industry later coupled to mark the area's decline in winter tourism, but not before Augusta-Aiken's place in golf history was secure. In this unique volume, vintage images and accompanying text recall the unfo rgettable legends, the meticulously maintained courses, and all of the grandeur associated with the game.

In 1927, amazed citizens of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, watched construction begin on a castle-like hotel surrounded by a beautiful golf course. Robbie Steele, a young caddie, watched each step in the transformation of his small hometown into a tourist mecca. He kept a diary of the exotic visitors who stepped off the train to enjoy the ocean breezes and splendor of the hotel and golf course. For one week each spring, a nomadic golfer named Hooker captured the attention of the town. He traveled with an obnoxious caddie and a young girl in a wheeled chair. Each member of the visiting trio dazzled local residents and hotel visitors until their final visit, a visit that ended abruptly in the middle of the night, leaving only rumors of a terrible tragedy. Five decades later, using his frayed diary and emerging technology, Steele attempts to discover what happened to the trio and the events that caused them to vanish. The trail of the mysterious Hooker has many twists and turns.
