CantonCanton is a city in Stark County, Ohio. As of the 2000 census, its population was 80,806. Canton was foudned in 1805, and incorporated as village in 1815, a town in 1834, and a city in 1854. The name was chosen by Bezaleel Wells, ultimately after Guangzhou, China, which was known at the time (and is still today sometimes known as) Canton. The reason that Wells chose the name, was in honor of a trader that he admired, called John O'Donnell, who had been the first person to import goods from China to Baltimore, and had subsequently titled his estate in Maryland as "Canton".
