WahpetonWahpeton is a city in Richland County, North Dakota. As of the 2000 census, its population was 8,586. The county of Richland is named for the first European settler, Morgan T. Rich, who reached the area in 1869, and for the rich black soil suitable for farming. Indeed, the settlement at Wahpeton, was at first called "Richville", then "Chahinkapa" (a Native American word meaning "end of the woods"), before Wahpeton was finally settled. The name Wahpeton was suggested by another early settler, William Cooper, who came up with the name by contracting "Warpeotonwe", a Native American word meaning "leaf village".
