Grand Forks

Grand Forks is the 3rd largest city in North Dakota. The city is located in Grand Forks County, in the East of the state. As of the 2000 census, its population was 49,321.

Grand Forks lies on the Western bank of the Red River, at the forks of the Red River and Red Lake River. The area has long been an important trading post - even before the arrival of Europeans, Native Americans met and traded at the site. BY the 1740s, French fur trappers were regular visitors to the area, and called the location "Les Grandes Fourches" (meaning "The Big Forks"). The name was simply changed to Grand Forks, when a U.S. post office was established in the area in 1870. The biggest spur to growth of the settlement occured in 1875, when Alexander Griggs, a steamboat captain, found his ship frozen in the Red River, and had to spend the winter at Grand Forks. Griggs thus became known as the "Father of Grand Forks".

Here are some other facts about Grand Forks:
  • The principal airport serving Grand Forks is Grand Forks International Airport.

  • Probably the best known educational institution in Grand Forks is the University of North Dakota, which is a public university which was founded in 1883, and is a member of the North Dakota University System (NDUS).
