BismarckBismarck is the capital of North Dakota, and county seat of Burleigh County. As of the 2000 census, Bismarck's population was 55,532, making it the 2nd most populous city in the state. Bismarck was originally founded in 1872, and initially called "Edwinton", after Edwin M. Johnson who was the chief engineer of the Northern Pacific Railway company. However, in 1873, the city's name was changed to Bismarck, after the German chancellor Otto von Bismarck, in an attempt to attract German immigrants to the city.
