AlamedaThe USS Hornet (CV-12) is aircraft carrier constructed for the US Navy during World War Two. Originally she was called the USS Kearsarge, but was renamed following the sinking of the previous USS Hornet (CV-8) during the Battle of Santa Cruz. Following World War Two, the Hornet was decommissioned for several years, but recommissioned in the early 1950s as an attack aircraft carrier (CVA-12). During this period, the USS Hornet served in the Mediterranean Sea, Indian Ocean and Pacific. USS Hornet was modernized in the 1959, and modified into an anti-submarine warfare carrier (CVS-12). In the 1960s, the Hornet continued to operate with the US 7th Fleet in the Pacific. She also acted as a recovery vessel for the Apollo launches, recovering an unmanned Apollo capsule launched in 1966, as well as the crews and capsules of Apollo 11 and 12 in 1969. USS Hornet was decomissioned in 1970, and in 1998 became a museum in Alameda, California. Related Links:
