Arkansas Flag
Here is the flag of Arkansas:
The flag of Arkansas shows a diamond
on a red field.
- The diamond represents the state's diamond mines (Arkansas
was the first state where diamonds were mined).
- The diamond is has a blue border containing twenty-five white stars.
These stars represent Arkansas' position as the 25th state to join the union.
- The blue star above the word "Arkansas" represents the state's
membership of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War.
- The blue stars below the word "Arkansas" represent, the three
nations to which Arkansas has belonged
(Spain,
France and the
United States of America), the year in which the Louisiana Purchase
occurred (1803), and that Arkansas was the third state
(after
Louisiana and
Mississippi)
formed from the Louisiana Purchase.
In
1911,
Arkansas did not have a state flag.
A competition was held by the Pine Bluff
chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, with a view to create a
state flag for the commissioning of the battleship USS Arkansas.
The winner was a design similar to the current state flag, created by
Willie Kavanaugh Hocker.
The flag was modified by the judging committee, and adopted by the state
legislature on
26th February
1913.
The flag was slightly modified in
1923, and again
1924,
and has remained unchanged since that time.
