Roadside Nature Released: 2009-11-19 Kindle Edition (41 pages)
 | List Price: $2.99* *(As of 03:07 Pacific 17 May 2012 More Info)
Click Here | Product Description: Highway 89A drops off the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau, through a fascinating landscape of ancient lava flows and giant sandstone spires and cliffs. The plant and animal life along the drive is as bizarre as it is beautiful. As the elevation decreases along the drive, conifer forests give way to diverse chaparral, woodland, and desert environments lined by the verdant streamside forests of Oak Creek. Each of these ecosystems are home to unique plants and animals including pig-like javelina and agave (the plant tequila is made from) in the desert, and reptile-hunting black hawks and giant Arizona sycamore trees along Oak Creek. Wildlife watching, especially birding, is exceptional in Oak Creek Canyon. Bring your binoculars!

About Roadside Nature Travel Guides
Roadside Nature is a new, different style of natural history travel guide that aims to cover the most spectacular scenic drives on the planet as well as some less popular routes that offer wilder, more intimate outdoor experiences for independent-minded travelers. Most nature guides cover identification of birds, reptiles, plants, rocks, and so on, or they focus on a particular environment, like the Sonoran Desert or the Everglades. Travel guides tend to concentrate on eating, sleeping, shopping, and city-based cultural and natural attractions.
Roadside Nature approaches nature-based travel a little differently; they describe the most prominent and fascinating natural features (whether they are geologic, avian, meteorological, or furry) along a specific travel path. Like other travel guides, Roadside Nature Travel Guides also cover the topics of eating and sleeping, but with the independent, outdoor-oriented traveler in mind, focusing mostly on quiet picnic spots and out of the way places to camp on public lands.
The biggest difference between a Roadside Nature Travel Guide and other guides is that they are written by local naturalists who are intimately familiar with their environments and passionate about sharing their knowledge with others. This hand-crafted approach lets you bring along the experience and knowledge of a local guide without cramping the independence or discovery that should be a part of every good trip.

Roadside Nature Released: 2010-04-14 Kindle Edition (42 pages)
 | List Price: $2.99* *(As of 03:07 Pacific 17 May 2012 More Info)
Click Here | Product Description: Interstate 40 from the New Mexico state line to Flagstaff, Arizona crosses the southeastern portion of the Colorado Plateau, which is dominated by the West Virginia-sized (27,000 square miles) Little Colorado River Basin. Despite draining such a huge area, the Little Colorado River (LCR) runs at a trickle, except during brief periods, usually in spring or summer, when it is a raging, muddy torrent. When the LCR is not “blown out,” (flooded) the riparian forests offer good bird-watching, and some of the clear-running tributaries near Winslow, including Chevlon Creek and East Clear Creek, are prime wildlife watching corridors.
Lush riparian forests are the exception along this drive. Most of the habitat you will observe is considered Colorado Plateau semi-arid grassland, which supports fairly diverse wildlife species. Pronghorn antelope can sometimes be seen from the Interstate, as can coyotes, ravens, and raptors. Side trips afford opportunities to see lizards, mule deer, elk, prairie dogs, and a variety of other wildlife species—even American bison. Geology enthusiasts will love this trip, especially with a few short side-trips. The towering sandstone cliffs of the Navajo Reservation, Meteor Crater, and the badlands of the Painted Desert are easily accessible from I-40.
The crown jewel of I-40’s geological extravaganza, with some good wildlife watching to boot, is Petrified Forest National Park near the halfway point between New Mexico and Flagstaff. This National Park is one of the country’s oldest and most fascinating, and well worth a visit. Also, if you have time, the Painted Desert Drive side trip to Holbrook makes for an unforgettable, surreal experience.

 | List Price: $2.99* *(As of 03:07 Pacific 17 May 2012 More Info)
Click Here | Product Description: Along this route you will see evidence of plant and animal adaptations to the extreme difference in elevation between Phoenix and Flagstaff. You will pass through a variety of ecosystems including the Sonoran Desert—arguably the most spectacularly weird desert on the planet. You will also see grasslands, open woodlands (savannas), and in the northern portion of the route, a majestic high-elevation conifer forest. Each of these ecosystems corresponds to a specific elevation range called a life zone.
Interstate 17 traverses millions of acres of public lands suitable for tent camping, hiking, and exploring. National monuments along this drive include the recently designated Agua Fria and the ecologically fascinating sinkhole called Montezuma Well. Montezuma castle, a spectacular prehistoric cliff dwelling is just a few minutes from the interstate, as are several other archaeological sites. Some of the natural history topics discussed in detail include: the Arizona monsoon phenomenon, saguaro cactus restoration, mastodon and camel fossils, Montezuma Well ecology, and tree parasites.
